Description
CHENNAI: Despite a low birth rate in the state, Chennai and neighbouring districts have seen an increase in the number of people in the working age group (15-59 years), according to data for 2011. The spike in the number of people in this age group in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Vellore, between 2001 and 2011 is mainly due to migration from other parts of the state, say population experts. The spurt in the number of industries in the northern districts, mainly in the automobile and IT sectors, seems to have fuelled this migration. A comparison of the data for 2011 and 2001 shows that Chennai in 2011 had a 31.83 lakh people in the working age group against 28.50 lakh in 2001. The figure in Kancheepuram was 27.01 lakh (18.50 lakh), Tiruvallur 25.25 lakh (17.95 lakh.) and Vellore 25.76 lakh (21.45 lakh). The state is reaping the benefit of high fertility rates prevalent 15-20 years ago, say experts. "Though the fertility rates have come down now, the state can make use of the available labour force to boost economic growth," said S Irudaya Rajan, professor, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. Chennai's working age population constitutes 68.49% of its total population, while it is 67.52% in Kancheepuram and 65.28% in Vellore.
