Description
Leaving home for higher education is no new story, what's new is the destination: different state within India. In the past decade itself around 37 lakh students have left their home states to study in Karnataka, the most popular choice for migrating students. Other common migration destinations are Delhi and Maharashtra, while the source of these migrating students is generally from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan. Many factors have led to this change in trend. Earlier, there were not many certified quality education centers within the country which led to students immigrating to other countries. Now with the improvement in infrastructure, emergence of new private universities, new IITs, new IIMs and greater awareness levels, students prefer to change states and not countries. A recent paper on Internal Migration for Education and Employment among Youth in India, commissioned by UN-HABITAT's Global Urban Youth Research Network, has shed light on this new migration trend. In the past over 70 per cent of young adults moved for matrimony purposes, 10 per cent to secure better employment opportunities and 3.5 per cent for educational reasons. "With uneven distribution of educational facilities, there are clearly going to be winner states and loser states. My paper maps the trends of migration and also leaves you with a question: Should we worry of the brain drain at the sub-national level?" said author S Chandrasekhar.
