Description
As large number of labourers are trafficked out of the State every year, the State Government of Odisha has decided to conduct a survey of bonded labourers. The last statewise survey for identification of bonded labour was conducted in 1996 on the direction of Supreme Court. The Government has not taken any initiative for conducting such survey on regular basis despite the fact that large number of bonded labourers were rescued from many southern states last year, official sources said. The Centre is providing financial assistance to the State under the Centrally sponsored scheme for rehabilitation of bonded labourers. It is the responsibility of the State Government to conduct survey in sensitive districts and take remedial measures.
