Description
Migrant workers from various parts of the country, engaged in the major infrastructure projects and construction industry across the State could end up as voiceless in the upcoming LS elections as most of them cannot afford to travel back to their home State to exercise their franchise. They can’t join the festival of democracy in Tamil Nadu as they do not have valid identity proof to register as voters. While Chennai is the home for thousands of workers from states like Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha, major cities like Coimbatore and Tirupur in the state too have witnessed a sharp increase in the population of migrant labourers. It is they who remain the backbone of the construction boom in Chennai.
