Description
The efforts of the district administration of Balangir to facilitate migrant labourers of Belpada block in the district to participate in the electoral process have fallen flat with labour contractors raising the issue of monetary loss of work due on the absence of the labourers. The contractors have sought payment of travel fares of the labourers who are to be brought back to the State of Odisha to exercise franchise. Belpada block is infamous for large scale migration of labourers to other States in search of work. The exodus is facilitated by the contractors, the most influential and wealthy persons in the chain. Earning a handsome amount by arranging labourers for brick kilns and private companies particularly from South India, they enjoy a wealthy life. Villagers from the block said the contractors earn crores every migration season. The trafficking business is carried on under the very nose of local police, enforcement agencies, State watchdogs and district administration officials who are hands in glove with the contractors.
