Description
The Migration Information and Resource Centre(MiRC), Aide et Action South Asia has reported that more than 50,000 families (around 2.5 lakh people) migrate from districts like Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Subarnapur and Sambalpur every year to neighbouring States. Umi Daniel, head of MiRC, said that “These workers are treated like animals at their workplaces as they do not have access to shelter, health and education for children. The much-glorified NREGA has failed to prevent migration as the scheme does not generate employment for labourers when they need it the most, during monsoon. Besides, the scheme had failed to generate 100 days of employment in backward districts. Therefore, it is essential to speed up NREGA work so that it can reduce distress migration."
