Description
In the wake of the death of two migrant workers while cleaning a manhole here the other day, the safety of the migrant population in the city has once again come under the scanner. On paper, the Kochi Corporation has mooted a comprehensive plan to ensure hygiene, safety and security of the migrant workers. Similar plans have been forged in the past too, but none of it has materialized so far. Earlier, the Corporation authorities had said that a list of the migrant labourers will be prepared and their records will be maintained. As per the plan, the contractors or agents who bring the labourers to the city will also have to maintain another ledger. This will help the authorities to track the details of the workers easily. But the plan is yet to materialise and the condition of the migrant labourers remain the same on the ground.
