Description
The recent drive by the Mysuru City Corporation to evict street and mobile vendors has rendered hundreds of youth jobless. One of the street vendors had even died of a massive heart attack two days after the eviction drive was conducted.Vendors, most of whom were educated unemployed youth, had started mobile eateries after they failed to get jobs in government or private institutions. Now, they are seen loitering around. R. Guruprasad Ramu, a diploma holder, was running a mobile eatery at Ramaswamy Circle. He said he had been running it for nearly 10 years and managed to eke out a living. He said the MCC’s move to evict vendors has affected hundreds of families dependent on hawking for sustenance. He wondered why the corporation evicted mobile eateries instead of focusing on other important issues such as lack of drinking water and garbage problem. Ravi, a B.Com graduate from Mysuru university, who could not get a job anywhere, was also running a mobile eatery. While condemning the MCC’s action, he said the reasons cited by the corporation that the presence of street vendors was impeding pedestrian movement and degrading the environment cannot be accepted. It is attempting to dislodge vendors without following established practices. This is against the direction of the State Municipal Administration, which had instructed the corporation to not disturb street vendors and, if possible, provide facilities to help carry out business, he said.
