Description
People in the drought-hit areas of Maharashtra, especially from Marathwada region, are migrating to Pune and Hyderabad, Congress MP Rajani Patil says. Marathwada, consisting of Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Nanded, Hingoli, Beed, Latur and Osmanabad districts, which were part of the erstwhile Nizam’s state of Hyderabad, has been known to be a drought-prone area. While Aurangabad, the regional headquarters, has been supplying water twice a week, Latur gets water once in 15 days, according to reports coming here. The region is politically powerful, but it has not solved its drinking water problem. Ms Patil, a sitting Rajya Sabha member, had earlier won the Lok Sabha election from Beed. She said that while the shortage of drinking water is compelling people to shift to Pune and Hyderabad, farmers have been doubly hit. They have no hopes for the kharif crop and are now facing the problem of maintaining livestock. “The government must immediately open up cattle camps. This could give some relief to farmers,” she said. Asked why people are migrating to Pune and Hyderabad, she said: “For jobs and water.”
