Description
School was not a priority for 12-year-old Ritu* whose day was usually spent at a construction site helping her parents. "On the days I didn't go to the site, I would take care of my three younger siblings at home," said the girl who a teacher persuaded to attend school. She is one of the many child labourers who will be incorporated in mainstream schools this summer under the National Child Labour Project. A total of 183 such children, mostly in the 9-15 age group, are being brought to the mainstream by the Montford Community Development Society (MCDS) as part of the NCLP project. Co-ordinator of MCDS, Greeto Racharia said transit classes were conducted for these students over a period of 11 months at corporation schools classrooms before the shift. "The corporation schools provided separate classrooms on their campuses for groups of these children to be taught the basics of different subjects. After 11 months, depending on the learning level and age groups, they will be put in the respective grades in schools. "Many parents are reluctant to send their wards to school. During the first three months, teachers have personally visited homes of these children and persuaded them to get dressed and motivated them to come to school," he said. (*name changed)
