Description
Poverty has been described as the biggest cause of child labour in the country. This was stated by Karachi University's Dean of Management and Administrative Sciences, Prof. Dr. Khalid Iraqi, an official of the institution said on Wednesday. He was speaking at a moot held at the University in connection with the International Labour Day organized by the Department of Public Administration (DPA). Prof. Iraqi was of the view that because of poverty, the child labour in Pakistan was high as compared to other countries. He opined that a long time has been passed since the adoption of International Labor Day but still the labor issues are present and no significant measures are taken to address these issues. Prof. Iraqi said that this day is marked to highlight the pertinent issues faced by the laborers and their human rights but it is direly needed to adopt practical measures to address these issues. He further remarked that the labourers have a pivotal role in the development of a country and that this aspect must not be neglected. The chairman of the Department of Public Administration, Prof. Dr. Shabib ul Hasan, said that an understanding towards the problems of weaker sections of the society must be created and we must identify the solutions to the problems like child labor, poverty and lack of education to make Pakistan a welfare state. The event was concluded with the resolution that Labor Day should not be just about celebrating a day but by providing better economic and social uplifting opportunities to the working classes of the society.
