Description
Over two-thirds of respondents to a Mint-instaVaani poll blamed migration from rural areas and smaller cities to metro cities for their sorry state of affairs and called for measures to address it. An overwhelming number of respondents also felt that India’s metro cities have not been planned well. Although steps like the National Rurban Mission—aimed at “reducing the burden of migration to the cities”—have been taken recently, the general sense is that what’s been done is too little, too late. A total of 512 respondents across major metros of the country were polled to assess their views about their cities’ development. In response to a specific query, 67% (238 respondents) said that migration from rural areas and other cities has to be addressed. Overall, 69% (352 respondents) said that their city has not been planned well. A city-wise breakup shows that 72% (114 respondents) from Chennai, 64% (99 respondents) from Delhi, 72% (72 respondents) from Kolkata, and 67% (67 respondents) from Mumbai felt that their city has not been planned well.
