Description
A study has revealed climate change as one of the factors behind migration in South Asia. The report 'Assessing Climate Change, Environmental Degradation and Migration Nexus in South Asia' presented at a programme organized here on Tuesday by the Government of Nepal and International Organization of Migration (IOM) drew the conclusion. The report stated that the climate change has resulted in low agro productivity, shortage of drinking water, soil erosion and floods and landslide thereby triggering migration in many areas. The assessment of the nexus between climate change and migration in South Asia has been initiated when there is very scanty research in this field. On the occasion, IOM Bangladesh Consultant Gulam Rabbani presented his study report on the status of migration caused by climate change in Bangladesh while researcher Sanjaya Sharma presented his report on the status of migration in Darchula district of Nepal due to climate change. A group discussion was also held on the occasion to draw conclusions on the topics of 'National Action Plan on Migration and Climate Change'. At the programme, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Labour and Employment Govinda Mani Bhusal said this is the first partnership programme between Labour Ministry and Ministry of Environment on climate change and migration and it requires further study. Likewise, Joint Secretary at Ministry of Population and Environment Ram Prasad Lamsal expressed his hope that the discussion on the new topic would help identify the gaps, challenges and opportunities of the area. IOM Nepal Chief Maurizio Busatti underlined the need of formulation of national policy on migration and climate change while adding that the day's discussion would contribute to that end.
