Description
In violation of the Child Labour Act, children below the age of 14 continue to be hired for various jobs, thanks to the callous attitude of the authorities concerned that failed to act tough against the violators. According to the Act, no child below the age of 14 can be employed for any work. As per sources, children mostly work at dhabas and tea stalls. Not only the administration, even the NGOs claiming to be the champion of children’s cause have failed to safeguard the fundamental right of the children. In the absence of any check, it becomes easy for people to employ minors for hazardous jobs. People often ask me, “Oye tu school kyu ni jata” ( Why don’t you go to school?). I do not know why they ask me the same question. It is understood that I am working, so I cannot go to the school,” said a child, who works on a construction site. A shopkeeper said children were “perfect” for light jobs. “They are available at cheaper wages than the regular labour. Secondly, they do not argue with the employer and work continuously,” he said. Meanwhile, some of the children said they worked out of some compulsion. “There is no other source of income for my family. Therefore, I have no option but to work,” they said. “Poverty forces children to work. Children’s are preferred as they can be retained for a longer period because they acquire no other skill except the work they are trained into, claimed Rajiv Sharma, a businessman. Shiv Kumar, SDM, Dera Bassi, said, “ We have already set up a committee to check the violation. Those found guilty will not be spared.
