Description
There are over 40 lakh labourers from other states doing various jobs here, but the state government has the records of only 1.5 lakh such workers. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed this in the Assembly while answering a question the other day. The CM said there are 1,56,048 migrant workers in the state as per the records kept at police stations following a directive of the DGP. According to a study conducted by the Central agency Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation, Thiruvananthapuram, three years ago, there were 25 lakh migrant labourers in Kerala. Law says that the agent who brings the labourers must submit the copies of their photo identity cards and other details in the respective police station. However, most of them don't follow this rule, authorities say. There is a flow of workers to Kerala from other states like nowhere else, according to records in possession of the agency....... In Ernakulam district alone, there are over eight lakh migrant workers. Kozhikode, Palakkad, and Thiruvananthapuram follow with over four lakh workers in each district. In Thrissur, Malappuram, Kollam, and Kannur, there are two to three lakh workers. In other districts also, upto 1.5 lakh migrant workers are there....... Thousands of workers come and go every week making it difficult for the Labour Department and the police to keep an accurate record of them. Each week at least 1500 new workers arrive in the state. Of the total workers, 55 per cent are from Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu. However, according to the state government, only 61, 858 of the 1,56,048 are from Bengal.......
