Description
An inspection of migrant labour camps in Konni by a Health Department team on Wednesday has found six migrant workers infected with the fatal parasite plasmodium falciparam that causes filariasis, a vector-borne disease which the State claimed to have eradicated decades ago. The inspection teams of the department have detected a total of 16 cases of filariasis and 23 cases of malaria, besides a good number of tuberculosis and leprosy patients, among the migrant workers, so far. Official sources said the inspection team could examine only a section of the migrant workers at the site of the Konni Government Medical College under construction as most of them shied away at the sight of the officials. Inspection of camps Deputy District Medical Officer L. Anithakumari told The Hindu that the Health Department had started inspection of labour camps in the district following reported cases of malaria among the migrant workers in recent times. According to Health Department sources, the heavy migrant labour influx from the north-eastern States has made Kerala susceptible to diseases like filariasis and malaria, which, the State claimed to have eradicated three decades ago. The Health team also came across the appalling living conditions of the migrant workers staying in squalid sheds at their camps. Official sources said migrant labourers were found to have been major carriers of malaria and filariasis reported from the district. Dr. Anithakumari said the Health Department had submitted a report to the district administration in 2015 itself, detailing the health risk posed by the carriers of various diseases among the migrant workers. It is estimated that the State houses 20 to 25 lakh migrant labourers, mostly from West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odhisa.
