Description
Migrant labourers from other parts of the country including Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand and Assam, staged a protest at Ambattur on Sunday, demanding minimum wages. Led by the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), the labourers also sought a census of migrant workers, voter ID cards, ESI and Provident Fund among other things. “Around 20,000 migrants form the backbone of the labour force in the Ambattur industrial estate and they are not treated properly by their employers. They come here seeking employment in order to support their families. None of the workers has been registered with the Labour office,” said Pughazhvendan of the AICCTU. ‘Ill-treated by employers’ Hira Paswan, a migrant from Bihar said that since they stayed away from their homes, their names were removed from family cards. Hence they demanded that they be provided with the family cards here to buy provisions. “We are not from outside India. But we are treated as third class citizens. Some 10 of us stay in one room and don’t have enough to eat. Adding to that, we are ill-treated by our employers,” he said. R. Mohan, State secretary, AICCTU, said that Kerala was planning to conduct a census on migrant labourers and a similar census in Tamil Nadu should be taken up. “Since these migrant labourers don’t have ESI, they cannot even go to the ESI hospital. They don’t have the money to go to private hospitals for treatment when they are injured. Many of them suffer injuries since they work in engineering units,” he pointed out.
