A provincial minister has claimed that his government will provide basic education and additional skill development with stipends to help children involved in child labour at workshops, petrol filling stations, hotels and restaurants and intended to tackle child labour. Labour and Human Resource Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, accompanied by Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed, who chaired the maiden meeting of the Steering Committee on Tuesday, also said the second phase of a child labour survey already conducted by the Bureau of Statistics would be completed in 13 districts along with the provincial capital by August 15. Briefing his audience on the project, the labour secretary said the statistics had collected in the first phase of the Provincial Child Labour Survey which showed 5,420 children under the age of 14 were working at auto workshops, 71 at petrol stations and 1,636 at hotels and restaurants in Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Khanewal, Bahawalnagar, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Okara, Multan, Rahim Yar Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan. He also talked about the third and final phases of the survey in the remaining 13 districts to be completed by September 15. The minister then said up to Rs 449 million had been set aside in the current fiscal year to eliminate child labour and non-government organisations would also be engaged. Those also present were Secretary of the Schools Education Abdul Jabbar Shaheen and his literacy counterpart, the chief executive officer of the Punjab Social Protection Authority, and the director general of the Bureau of Statistics and his labour counterpart.
