Description
Budding lawyers in the city pledged to act against child labour at a multi-stakeholder engagement for a child labour-free Bihar, jointly organised by Unicef and The Times of India at Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) on Tuesday. With a view to tackling child labour menace and for protection and promotion of child rights in the state, Unicef and TOI have launched a public advocacy campaign, 'Tokenge, rokenge, badlenge -- fight unfair - Act now for child labour free-Bihar'. The CNLU students were told about this campaign and a logo of the same was released on the occasion. The 45-minute inaugural session on 'Lawyers unite against child labour' included the screening of a short film on child labour. The lawyers were also moved by experiences shared by some rescued child labourers. CNLU vice chancellor A Lakshminath delivered the keynote address. The technical session witnessed a panel discussion on "Countdown to a child labour-free Bihar and the role of lawyers". Experts, including Justice (retd) Rajendra Prasad of the Patna high court, Bachpan Bachao Andolan state convenor Mukhtarul Haq, Patna high court advocate Sanjay Singh and ADG (CID) Vinay Kumar expressed their views on the occasion. They also took questions from the students and a mock court too was organised to raise awareness against child labour. The event concluded with presentation of the 'Charter of Commitments - To End Child Labour' by lawyer Yogesh Chandra Verma. Unicef team members, who were at the helm of affairs, included communication specialist Nipurnh Gupta, programme manager Shivendra Pandya and child protection specialist Mansoor Qadri.
