Description
The Tamil Nadu Government was fully committed to eradication of child labour in the state with a vision to provide for robust growth and development of children, Labour Minister Dr Nilofer Kafeel told the State Assembly today. Moving the demand for grants for her department, she said due to the concerted efforts taken by the state government, there was a perceptible decline in child labour in the state. She said the state government adopts an integrated multi-pronged strategyf or elimination of the menace of child labour, through convergence of various departmental efforts to improve the health, education and well being of children and families from poorer sections of the society. Dr Kafeel said the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and the allied Acts prohibiting employment of children, were efectively implemented in the state by the officers of the department of labour and directorate of industrial safety and health. ''Eradication of child labour is possible only through effective enforcement of the law at the grass root level'', she said, adding, district level task force was functioning in every district under the chairmanship of the district collector to monitor and strengthen enforcement activities. Pointing out that the number of child labour has steadily reduced over the years due to rigorous enforcement, rescue and reahabilitation efforts taken by the government, Dr Kafeel said Census 2001 put the number of child labour in Tamil Nad at 4.19 lakh, while in Census 2011 it was estimated at 1.51 lakh. She said according to a recent survey by Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (Education for All), the estimated number of out of school children due to economic compulsion was declining fast in the state.
