Description
The Labour Department will conduct a new survey to find out the number of child labourers in all districts of the State. This apart, a Special National Child Labour Project would begin in 24 districts soon to rehabilitate and provide education to the rescued child labourers. This was informed by E Srinivas, Principal Secretary of Labour Department during his recent visit to Berhampur to attend a review meeting. The department does not have accurate figures on the number of child labourers in the State. “The last survey on child labourers was conducted in 1996 and only 11 districts were covered then. Hence, we are going for a fresh survey in which 24 districts will be covered,” he said, adding that the survey would be extended to rest six districts after approval of the Union Government. Srinivas said the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986 has been amended under which engaging children below 14 years of age in hazardous works is prohibited. Steps are being taken to register the child labourers and the District Collectors would be empowered specially for the purpose. The registration would be done online.
