Description
Ahead of the Centre's decision of demonetisation of higher currency notes leaving everyone specially the workers in the unorganised sector in a worried state. These workers are now left with nothing but to mightily avail the Centre's directives of opening zero-balance accounts during a special drive undertaken by the labour department here. Around 2,239 workers from the unorganized sector here have opened their accounts in a span of two days at special camps organised by Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) for all the nine talukas in the district. The Aurangabad district labour officer, Arvind Telwadkar said, "A total 2,701 target beneficiaries registered themselves during the camp, of which total 2,239 opened their bank accounts by Sunday." Telwadkar said, "The representatives of nationalised banks, APMCs and labour office helped out the target beneficiaries in opening up their bank accounts. The beneficiaries had a choice to choose to open an account in any bank as per their convenience." This has come under affect after the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Centre, has asked its subordinate offices to open bank accounts for worker/employee, especially in respect of contract and casual workers. The process of opening the bank accounts will be done by the end of this month and in the first week of December the ministry has asked the concerned officials to submit a formal report by December 2.Assistant Labour commissioner Abhay Gite, who is also holding additional charge of deputy labour commissioner for Marathwada, said, "There are several workers from unorganised sector who already have a bank account. This operation is for workers who are donot have a bank account." He said, "We have a couple of welfare boards dedicated to the unorganised sector workers, where it is mandatory for the workers to possess a bank account. Therefore, a major chunk of workers already possess a bank account." There are almost 45,000 registered workers in the district who are working in unorganised sectors belonging to Mathadi category, construction field, domestic aid and those associated with security agencies. A labour department official said, "The drive for bank accounts for workers will be smoothly planned coinciding with the weekends. There are various enterprises who do not deliberately keep a record of workers employed under them; therefore the labour unions hope that opening of bank accounts of workforce from unorganised sector will be a step towards formalising their services.
