Description
During the ongoing election campaigning, migrant workers are in high demand as political parties have to show their strength in the rallies. Politicians have been making good offers to construction labourers, who used to stand at labour chowks, on any normal day. After the demonetisation, labourers have been facing hard time as work has stopped at construction sites. Political activists are reportedly paying them to attend political rallies, which has to some extent mitigated their sufferings. Several national leaders of political parties have been addressing rallies in the city. Well-off local residents are not willing to attend political rallies in the shivering cold. The candidates of major parties have no other option except to gather crowd in their rallies. “A local activist had offered me a bottle of liquor to attend rally in the evening. I did not accept his offer as it is not healthy practice. But, there are many, who are getting money or liquor to come in the rally,” said a labourer. Meanwhile, a contractor at the construction site said, “Labour chowks have witnessed a fall in number of labourers due to election season. Political parties pay them to sit and hear speeches of politicians”. Not only construction labourers, industrial labourers too are being roped in show strength in rallies. Industrialists, who have political aspirations, also send their labour to attend rallies.
