Description
The Union Government aims to reduce child labourers in dangerous workplaces, Minister of Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe said. “We will conduct education programs for them and reduce child labour in dangerous workplaces,” he said after officiating a seminar in Nay Pyi Taw on the drafting of a national-level plan for child labour eradication yesterday. There are nearly 1.3 million child labourers in Myanmar, according to data from the ministry. U Thein Swe said his ministry will work with the Ministry of Education to organise learning opportunities for child labourers, with the aim of improving their lives. “We’ve negotiated with the Ministry of Education to provide learning opportunities for child workers,” he said. But he said many families would face financial difficulties if their children stop working. “We are aiming to reduce child labour although their families may face difficulties. Some child workers don’t want to work but their parents rely on their income. So there will be difficulties for families if we encourage children not to work,” said U Thein Swe. He said to address this situation, his ministry will cooperate with related ministries, parliament, NGOs, INGOs and civil society groups to improve the lives of child labourers. Poverty, the education system, natural disasters and migration are main reasons children work in Myanmar. More than 10 percent of the nation’s minors, or 1.2 million children, are employed across the informal and informal sectors, including as unpaid labour for family businesses such as farming, according to ministry statistics. U Win Shein, director general of the Factories and General Labour Law Inspection Department, said there is a need for more vocational and high schools to alleviate poverty. “Most of work areas involving children are not covered by labour laws. Most of the children in villages in the states and regions work on family farms or businesses and are considered child labourers under the law,” he said. Children aged between five and 18 are defined as child labourers under the Child Labour Law. The ministry expects to finalise the draft of the national plan by November. Work on the draft began after a four-year plan to eradicate child labour was launched in 2014. “We will discuss the draft plan at this meeting and it will be finalised before the end of the year,” said U Thein Swe.
