Description
Education is the only weapon which can handle many problems in society including the child labour menace, said District Education Officer (DEO) A. Subba Reddy. Speaking at an awareness programme on Special Schools, being organised by the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) at Vambay Colony here, Mr. Reddy said education would eliminate poverty, infuse knowledge, change the lives of the poor and prevent child labour system and asked parents to send their wards to schools. “There are many children who came from poor background but reached great heights,” he said and praised the NCLP for supporting government schools by running Special Schools for the poor, dropouts and runaway boys and girls. NCLP Krishna district Project Director (PD) D. Anjaneya Reddy said 648 dropouts were admitted in 17 Special Schools for child labour in the district. The children belonged to various slums whose parents were labourers working as domestic helps or in quarries, brick kilns, hotels and other establishments, he said. “Under the project, the staff will visit houses and identify children engaged in labour work and dropouts, convince parents and admit them in the Special Schools. The NCLP Schools were working in various mandals in the district,” he said here on Saturday and inaugurated the posters against child labour. Vocational training After completion of training in the Special Schools, the students would be admitted in regular schools and join the mainstream, said the official and asked the teachers to maintain good relationship with parents. The teachers should ensure that students attend classes regularly. “Separate vocational training should be given for boys and girls in the Special Schools. Teachers should involve students in embroidery work, decoration material, painting, book binding and other work,” he told the vocational teachers. Assistant Labour Officer B.
